In 1802, Bowdoin held its first classes for eight understudies empowered by the College's pioneer to work "for the advantage of everybody." Harriet Beecher Stowe stayed in contact with her untouchable abolitionist novel and a champion amongst the most convincing books ever, Uncle Tom's Cabin, on Bowdoin's grounds, where her mate was a previous understudy and an instructor of rationality.
