Endorsed in 1793, Williams was the twenty-first establishment of higher learning in the past British territories and the second in Massachusetts. Purple was picked as the school's shading when, in 1865, the College's baseball gathering was leaving for Cambridge to play against Harvard, which had picked its own specific shading (maroon at the time). Two female supporters of the Williams bunch hurried to find majestic purple trim to accommodate their own specific players and, the day after Williams won, grand purple flew from the grounds masthead. Williams was named the #1 National Liberal Arts College by U.S. News and World Report.
